La monographie SHEEN-wah-ZREE propose pour la première fois une vue d’ensemble du travail de l’artiste sino-québécoise Karen Tam, dont la production artistique s’étend sur plus de deux décennies. Le livre réunit des textes de spécialistes étroitement liés à l’artiste : Alice Ming Wai Jim, Cheryl Sim, Laura Vigo et Marcel Blouin, qui analysent différentes facettes de l’œuvre de Tam, notamment son engagement politique, son humour critique, son usage de l’ironie et son rapport aux questions d’identité, d’authenticité, de colonialisme et de racisme systémique.
Graphiquement conçu par le studio LOKI, l’ouvrage adopte une esthétique dynamique en adéquation avec l’univers foisonnant de Tam. Il inclut près de 400 illustrations réparties en six sections thématiques : Famille, Exotisme, Archives, Migrations, Communauté et un Cabinet de curiosités, lequel regroupe 372 images supplémentaires.
Cette publication est un coédition de Plein sud et d’EXPRESSION, Centre d’exposition de Saint-Hyacinthe, a été conçue suite aux expositions Les enfants des brigands de Karen Tam, présentées à Plein sud du 3 septembre au 22 octobre 2022 et à EXPRESSION du 11 novembre 2017 au 4 février 2018.

SHEEN-wah-ZREE is the first comprehensive overview of the art of Karen Tam, a Quebec artist from a Chinese background whose career stretches over two decades. The books brings together texts by specialists closely associated with the artist : Alice Ming Wai Jim, Cheryl Sim, Laura Vigo, and Marcel Blouin, who analyze various facets of Tam’s work, ranging from her political engagement, critical humor, use of irony and relationships to questions of identity, authenticity, colonialism and systemic racism.
With graphic design by LOKI, the monograph adopts a dynamic aesthetic in keeping with Tam’s prolific body of work. It comprises nearly 400 illustrations organized into six thematic sections : Family, Exoticism, Archives, Migrations, Community and a Curiosity Cabinet which brings together 372 additional images.
This publication is a co-edition of Plein sud and EXPRESSION, Centre d’exposition de Saint-Hyacinthe, following the exhibitions We are all Robbers by Karen Tam, presented at Plein sud from September 3 to October 22, 2022 and at EXPRESSION from November 11, 2017 to February 4, 2018.
